Formation of Globular Cluster Messier 4

Specially prepared for the Space Telescope Science Institute and NASA, this digital painting depicts the formation of the ancient cluster of stars -- a favorite target of amateur astronomers -- as it might have appeared some 13 to 14 billion years ago, not long after the formation of our Milky Way Galaxy and the birth of the Universe itself. Available as 8x10, 11x14 and 16x20-inch prints.

Starburst Universe

Another spectacular digital painting prepared for STScI/NASA is this depiction of a time even earlier, when irregularly-shaped infant galaxies condensing out of the primordial cosmic medium are buffetted by intense episodes of star formation known as "starbursts". Available as 8x10, 11x13 and 16x19 inch prints.

Solar Flare

This painting, prepared during our Sun's recent rise to maximum activity, depicts the most violent explosions in the Solar System -- a giant sunspot complex with a surface area greater than a dozen Earths erupts in a massive solar flare as pent up magnetic fields suddenly release the energy equivalent of up to a billion megatons of TNT, an amount exceeding that expended by all of human civilization over its entire history. Available as 8x10, 11x14 and 16x20-inch prints.

Exclusively available from OmniCosm Studios: introducing the Ancient Spacecraft Series -- buy all three now at a special, limited time discount rate.

Ancient Pioneer

In 1971 the spacecraft Pioneer 10 was launched on humanity's first reconnaissance of Jupiter -- and on a trajectory that would eventually escape the Solar System into interstellar space beyond. Orbiting through the Milky Way galaxy independently, the silent derelict will make relatively close encounters with stars every several million years. The painting depicts the old spacecraft a billion years in the future, eroded by interstellar dust and pockmarked by eons of micrometeoroid impacts, as it passes within a light-year of a star very different from its home sun -- a brilliant blue giant star. Available as 8x10, 11x14 and 16x20-inch prints.

Ancient Voyager

In celebration of its 25th anniversary the artist has produced this scene depicting the Voyager 2 spacecraft 3 billion years from now, as it makes one of its infrequent close approaches to a star - this one has ejected its outer atmosphere to form a nebula. In that time the spacecraft will have circumnavigated the Milky way more than 15 times, as will its home Sun. But they will be nowhere near each other, having gradually separated until they probably reside on opposite sides of the galaxy. Presently Voyager 2 is the most remote man-made object, and it remains alive and well as it continues to monitor the fringes of the Solar System in the depths far beyond Pluto for signs of the heliopause, the boundary where the dominating influence of the Sun's wind gives way to genuine interstellar weather. Like their predecessors Pioneers 10 and 11, the twin Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft were originally launched (in 1977) on missions to Jupiter and the outer Solar System. These four spacecraft are all on solar-escape trajectories which will carry them relentlessly into the interstellar void. Like sophisticated messages in bottles cast into the cosmic ocean, they all carry messages of introduction to any extraterrestrial beings which may possibly one day encounter them - pictographic plaques aboard the two Pioneers and phonograph records (visible on this painting) which contain the sights and sounds of long ago and far away Earth aboard the two Voyagers. Available as 8x10, 10x11.8 and 16x17.2-inch prints.

Ancient Pioneer II

Wandering Amongst the Stars

This visualization emotionally captures the solitude of the ancient Pioneer 11 spacecraft as it silently drifts on its endless journey through the celestial forest of stars and dust clouds in the Milky Way. A fine companion to the other Ancient Spacecraft prints - get all three prints of the series at a special discount. Available as 8x10, 11x14 and 16x20-inch prints.

Star Stream

Giant Spiral Galaxy NGC 6872 and Companions

Located over 300 million light-years away in the constellation of Pavo, the giant barred-spiral galaxy NGC 6872 exhibits arms stretching at least three-quarters of a million light-years from end to end, about 8 times the diameter of our own Milky Way galaxy. Its sprawling arms may be due to one or more "collisions" with its dwarf galaxy companion IC 4970: gravitational tides could have extended the galaxy's two main arms and flung them outward producing twin "star streams" laced with active star-forming regions. This portrayal of the system places the viewer near the end of one of the streams, looking back "upstream" to the source. Available as 8x10, 11x14 and 16x20-inch prints.

Print derived from original painting (2001) acrylic on illustration board, 20x27 inches; collection of astronomer Malcolm Currie.
