Painting by Adolf Schaller for STScI / NASA

The globular star cluster Messier 4 (M4 -- left) is seen shortly after its formation some 12.7 billion years ago.  The cluster is still enshrouded by the residual gas out of which it formed, blown outwards by strong cluster winds and the shock waves of numerous supernova explosions.  In the background numerous other young globular clusters and "starburst" star-forming regions are scattered throughout the region surrounding the active core of the young galaxy which will one day be called the Milky Way by an intelligent inhabitant which will evolve on a small planet that will not form for another 8 billion years.

This site is under construction.
